The Amazons, women warriors, are said to have ruled a region that Herodotus of Halicarnassus (5th century BC) in “Stories” situates in the border area between Scythia and Sarmacia. According to the Byzantine John Tzetzes (12th century AD) in “Post-Homeric”, the Amazon Penthesilea is supposed to have participated in the Trojan War.

Donkeys in paintings

Due to their possessions, artisans mainly used donkeys as saddle animals. Jesus Christ is represented next to this kind of animal during his birth, the flight to Egypt and his entry into Jerusalem (Matthew, 21, 1-11).
