The merchant of Venice by W. Shakespeare (1564-1616)

The British expelled the Jews in 1290 and only agreed to receive them again in 1655 (Oliver Cromwell). The author of this tragic comedy was familiar with the anti-Jewish feeling of his time. Anthony, a Christian of Venice, appears as the victim of Shylock, a Jewish moneylender.

Os Ingleses expulsaram os Judeus em 1290 e só os aceitaram de volta em 1655 (Oliver Cromwell). O autor desta comédia trágica conhecia o ambiente anti-judaico do seu tempo. António, cristão de Veneza, aparece como vítima de Shilock, agiota Judeu.
