Suvorov crossing the Alps (Suvorov atravessa os Alpes) (1799)

Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1727-1800) commanded the Russian army expedition to Italy (1799-1800) to fight Napoleon. He won the battles of Cassano d'Adda, Trebbia and Novi. After the defeat of General Korsak against Andre Massena at Zurich, he crossed the Alps in the winter of 1799. Palatial intrigues prevented him from being received by the Czar. He lived in his palace in St. Petersburg until his death. He is buried in this town in the Church of the Annunciation in the Monastery of Alexander Nevski. His home was turned into a museum with his name. On 21 September 2009, Dmitry Medvedev, president of the Russian Federation, inaugurated a monument in Switzerland to commemorate the event.

Após a derrota do general Korsak contra André Massena em Zurique, atravessou os Alpes no inverno de 1799. Intrigas palacianas impediram-no de ser recebido pelo Czar. Viveu no seu palácio de São Petersburgo até ao seu falecimento. Encontra-se sepultado nesta cidade na Igreja da Anunciação do Mosteiro de Alexander Nevski. A sua residência foi transformada em museu com o seu nome. A 21 de Setembro de 2009, Dmitry Medvedev, presidente da Federação Russa, inaugurou na Suíça um monumento alusivo ao acontecimento.
