Maria Leopoldina Empress consort of Brazil (1797-1826)
The Archduchess Leopoldina, daughter of Francisco II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and of Maria Teresa of the Two Sicilies, married Prince Pedro of Bragança in 1817. In September 1822 she was regent of Brazil during the absence of her husband, who was in Sao Paulo preparing the Declaration of Independence. After the Council of Ministers she wrote in a letter to her husband “the fruit is ready to be harvested”. She was the mother of Mary II, Queen of Portugal, and Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil.
A arquiduquesa Leopoldina, filha de Francisco II, Imperador do Sacro Império Romano-Germânico e de Maria Teresa das Duas Sicílias, casou em 1817 com o príncipe D. Pedro de Bragança. Em Setembro de 1822 foi regente do Brasil durante a ausência do marido em São Paulo a preparar a declaração da Independência. Após Conselho de Ministros escreveu em carta ao marido «o fruto está pronto para ser colhido». Foi mãe de D. Maria II, rainha de Portugal, e de D. Pedro II, Imperador do Brasil.
