The Russian troops, commanded by the Grand Duke Nicholas Nicolaevich I, crossed the Danube and attacked the Bulgarian town of Nikopol where the Ottoman army surrendered on July 16, 1877. The Russians went on to Plevna where they fought against the Ottomans on 27 August. The city surrendered after a three-month siege. The painter Nikolai Dmitriev-Orenburgsky (1837-1898) shows some scenes of this war in the Balkans.
