Josué (VII, 25) indica que Acã foi morto por apedrejamento, no vale de Açor, por roubo. Mataram Nabot (I Reis XXI, 13) do mesmo modo. Atribuía-se no Antigo Testamento a casos de adultério. No Levítico (XX, 10) «se um homem cometer adultério com mulher casada (...) serão punidos com pena de morte». Há várias situações no Deuteronómio (XIII, 10), I Reis (XII, 18), II Crónica (X, 18), Actos dos Apóstolos (XIV, 19). Jesus Cristo (São João, VIII, 7) disse, perante a acusação de Fariseus e escribas a uma mulher apanhada em flagrante, «quem estiver puro atire a primeira pedra». O Corão não menciona a lapidação como pena, mas em alguns países justificam a Lei Islâmica com relatos da vida do Profeta Maomé.
