The Romans rebuilt (116 BC) an ancient Persian fortress, where in the year 969 AD the Fatimite erected the city of Al-Qahira or 'The Victorious'. It was invaded by Mamluks, Ottomans (1517), French led by Napoleon (1798-1801) and by British. It is considered the biggest city in Africa and in the Muslim world.
