According to Homer (Odyssey), Calypso, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys or Atlas and Pleione, lived in a cave on the island of Ogygia. The cave was surrounded by a forest and a sacred fountain. Calypso fell in love with Odysseus to whom she offered immortality as long as he didn’t abandon her. After seven years, Zeus sent the messenger Hermes to allow the hero’s departure.
