Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel

The painter Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (1815-1905) was born in the city of Breslau, in Silesia, now Wroclaw in Poland. He attended the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin and later devoted himself to lithography. He accepted the task of illustrating the works of Goethe and Franz Kugler about Frederick II of Prussia.

O pintor Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (1815-1905) nasceu na cidade de Breslau, na Silésia, atual Wroclaw da Polónia. Frequentou em Berlim a Real Academia de Artes. Dedicou-se à litografia. Aceitou a incumbência de ilustrar obras de Göethe e de Franz Kugler sobre Frederico II da Prússia.

Temples of Paestum

The ancient Greek city Poseidonia was renamed as Paestum by the Romans. It is located 40km south of Salerno. Among the Doric Order temples it is possible to see the ruins of Hera (6th century BC), Poseidon (Neptune) (5th century BC) and Ceres (in fact dedicated to Athena).

A antiga cidade grega de Poseidonia recebeu dos romanos a denominação de Paestum. Situa-se 40km a sul de Salerno. De entre os templos de ordem dórica são visíveis as ruínas de Hera (séc. VI aC), Poseidon (Neptuno) (séc. V aC) e Ceres, na realidade dedicado a Palas Atena.

Voyage in Italy of Abbé St. Non

This French priest, known as Jean-Claude Richard of St. Non (1727-1791) studied in Rome where he met the painters Jean Fragonard and Hubert Robert. When he decided to travel across the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, he hired some of the best painters to document the remarkable work he would write later.
